At home but far from well

Hi All,
Kevin here again.  It has been a while since I last updated you on Katie's condition and I thought it was about time since things have evolved a bit since the last update.  As you know we are home from the hospital and we were doing radiation treatment to arrest the bleeding in Katie's stomach.  We have finished the 10 rounds of radiation and we thought we were past the bleeding but in the last couple of days Katie's nausea and vomiting have become worse and the bleeding has returned once again. She was going through a time of vomiting about once every hour and a half or so with quite a bit of blood in her vomit; not something I wanted to see. She has now seemed to have passed the worst of the bleeding and we have her nausea mostly under control.
0
In addition to the increased nausea is vastly increased pain. We have been upping her morphine dose almost every day, with her reaching 90mg/hr this afternoon. She is now pretty much pain free but is also pretty much unconscious. Our hospice nurse has tried to convince us to make the transition to the Hospice House, but as of this afternoon Katie has remained adamant that she is not ready to pack her bags just yet. We shall see what the future brings but please know that we have made the hard decision to stop treatments and not pursue further chemo or radiation. At this point we are continuing the TPN (IV nutrition) but we are not convinced it is helping her condition as her weight continues to drop.

Please keep Katie in your prayers and please keep the cards coming, she loves to look at all the wonderful crafting you put into your cards.

Take care,
Kevin

I will be praying that she finds peace and that she has relief from her pain. Hugs to you and your boys.

What a blessing that Katie is at home surrounded by family. We were able to provide that for my dad a few years ago and it was very peaceful.

I was 20 when my mom lost her battle with cancer (alone in the hospital in the middle of the night). It took me a very long time to realize that God had other plans for her. I am now 43 and have felt her with me many many times. She watches over my children and nieces.

My prayers go out to your family, your children especially!! This is not an easy time right now, but so many people care about you!! I pray for Katie to be pain free and cherish her time with you!!

Kevin, you and Katie are in my thoughts. I am praying Katie has a personal relationship with Jesus as she slips into eternity. I am also praying that you do as well because what you are facing, both now and in the future, will require a strength greater than your own. In Christ's love,
Jackie

This poem I read is not attributed to an author but it spoke to me and I wanted to share it with you.
We all have faced times when those we loved are in the final stages of life. It is hard to let go of someone we love so much.
Katie is loved by many and her presence will remain long after physical self is gone. Katie will always be present...her radiant smile, her joyful spirit and the memories you have shared for the many years you have spent together. Katie is special and I feel honored to have been able to get to know her through this blog

"What is dying? I am standing on the seashore. A ship sails to the morning breeze and starts for the ocean. She is an object of beauty and I stand watching her till at last she fades on the horizon, and someone at my side says, "She is gone." Gone where? Gone from my sight, that is all; she is just as large in mast and hull and spar as she was when I saw her, and just as able to bear her load of living freight to its destination.

The diminished size and total loss of sight is in me, not in her; and just at the moment when someone at my side says, "She is gone," there are others who are watching her coming, and other voices take up the glad shout, "There she comes!"--and that is dying."
Blessings go out to your family!

Kevin - I, too, have been checking the blog regularly and thought that no post was a sign that all was well. I am so very sorry that this wasn't the case. I think of all of you, often and wish that I lived closer so that I might have been able to give you some respite, sit with Katie, or do whatever was needed at any particular moment. No one could have asked for a more loving, devoted husband than you. I am praying now, as I have been, for peace for all of you. Katie, you have been an inspiration to all of the stamping community, not just with your gorgeous creations, but with your grace and elegance during this most difficult of times. We all love you!

The above anonymous comment was from Becky Jo. I have no idea what key I hit to make it go in three times, but then again maybe you needed to hear it three times and a higher power helped me out.

Kevin, Katie and your family are constantly in our thoughts and prayers. I hope that knowing so many people are surrounding you with love and thoughts is somehow comforting you all during this most difficult time.

On Saturday, I will ride 40 miles in South Florida in support of cancer research and to honor Katie...her spirit and strength will help fuel me along the way.

It is so hard to find the right words during times like these, but please know that what is on my heart is peace and love and many, many prayers. I am absolutely in awe of the love and emotions running through the huge network of wonderful people rallying around Katie, Kevin and the boys. What a tribute that is to what an amazing person you are, Katie! I will not give up praying for a miracle but during this time, I pray you aren't in any pain. Huge hugs to the Renz family!

Kevin, thank you so very much taking the time to update us. I, too, was hoping that no update meant that you all were enjoying spending time together. My heart sank when I've learned of Katie's current condition. I am so very sorry for what Katie and you all are going through. I have no other words, but profound sadness. Please let Katie know how much she is in our thoughts and prayers. That we wish her peace and comfort in her journey. That she has inspired so many with her creativity, spirit, courage and so much more. Sending you all love and prayers constantly.
