Going Home

Quick update while I wait for Katie's transport to radiation to arrive. We will be heading home today! Just need to get radiation done, home meds sorted, and wait to discharge. We will be keeping on the same program of IV pain and nausea meds at home; I think I'm greeting close to having my homeschool nursing degree. Also found out that we were scheduled for 10 radiation treatments (six more after today). In the rush to get her started we didn't have a chance to go over the full details of how many and what the schedule would be, now we do.

I have come upon your story from another blog. It really hit home with me. My best friend, whom I had known since kindergarten (30+ years ago), passed away 8 years ago from stomach cancer, at the age of 37. Reading your story has brought back so many memories for me, good and bad. She left behind a husband, and two young children. She was very strong, and put up a good fight, but this terrible disease took her. I am thinking of you, and praying for you. I was so glad to hear the radiation was helping, and that you were able to go home. I can't imagine how happy that must make you, and your family. Stay strong.

Kevin...thank you so much for the updates. Katie is so lucky to have you.

This poem I read is not attributed to an author but it spoke to me and I wanted to share it with you.
We all have faced times when those we loved are in the final stages of life. It is hard to let go of someone we love so much.
Katie is loved by many and her presence will remain long after physical self is gone. Katie will always be present...her radiant smile, her joyful spirit and the memories you have shared for the many years you have spent together. Katie is special and I feel honored to have been able to get to know her through this blog

"What is dying? I am standing on the seashore. A ship sails to the morning breeze and starts for the ocean. She is an object of beauty and I stand watching her till at last she fades on the horizon, and someone at my side says, "She is gone." Gone where? Gone from my sight, that is all; she is just as large in mast and hull and spar as she was when I saw her, and just as able to bear her load of living freight to its destination.

The diminished size and total loss of sight is in me, not in her; and just at the moment when someone at my side says, "She is gone," there are others who are watching her coming, and other voices take up the glad shout, "There she comes!"--and that is dying."
