Better Times

Hi All,

As I was sitting here for the last few days I was looking back at the months since Katie's diagnosis and thinking about all the fun times we have had and trips we made.  Things like our visit to Disneyland:

Or just the little times just sitting around the house reading a bedtime story to the twins:

The little trips we made as a family:

I know that when the years have passed we will not remember the nasty aspects of treatment or the pain and suffering we will remember the good times; the smiles and joy that we have had together.

Even here at the Hospice House we have been able to form some good memories, and have seen the smile we all love so much:

Katie has been sleeping peacefully since my last update and we are taking her medications down at a slow but steady pace looking for a place where we will be able to talk to her but she will not be in pain.  I am hopeful that we will find the perfect balance but should we not I am happy that she is resting and comfortable.

Take care,
Kevin

My husband is a retired FF/Paramedic, and of course my daddy was a Minister for years. My husband said keep talking to her, she can hear you. I have a great faith in God, and have seen the Lord do so many good things. To me this is a prayer answered that Katie is resting and not in pain. I keep praying, and will continue to do so Kevin, keep your faith no matter what! Hugs! Don & Leah Ann Gast

My heart breaks for you and your family, knowing that the end is so close. Know that God keeps you all firmly wrapped in love and devotion. Knowing that you have had the most wonderful 21 years with Katie and are able to continue sharing her love with your children is a blessing that only you and Katie could share. May God watch over you and your boys and continue to show you the loving care he has given from the beginning. Our best to you, Katie and your children.

Kevin,
Your posting was a beautifully shared with all the lovely photos of Katie and her family and the love that exudes from the photos! I thoroughly enjoyed seeing them and reading your thoughts about them. I cannot imagine the mixture of emotions that you must be feeling but I do want you to know that even if you think Katie can't hear you, you keep talking. I've heard that they hear us when it seems that they "can't" and that's a beautiful thing. I'm praying for Katie, you and the boys and it is my hope that you can draw strength from the Lord day-by-day. God bless.

Kevin,
I hope you realize how many hearts your family has touched. I hope also that you keep Katie's blog live even if you never add to it when she is gone. Your story has moved those of us who love Katie tremendously. I bet that for every comment posted here, that there are dozens, if not hundreds, that have read, laughed, cried, been inspired, and prayed along with us. People who were at a loss for words or thought because they don't know Katie, that perhaps they shouldn't post. I hope they do now so you can have a better idea of the angel Katie has been on here stay here on Earth.
This blog has changed my outlook on terminal illness. You have managed to find joy and make wonderful memories for your family despite your daily struggles and it was done with tremendous GRACE.
I will be referring everyone I know who is facing a similar fate to your blog. It is by far the most inspirational story I have read in a long long time.
I know I am just a design team sister of Katie's, and have never met her in person or even spoke on the phone, but I am so proud to call her my friend. She is going to take up a little spot in my heart forever!
Thank you so much for this beautiful post and pictures today. Yes...once again , as I have every time I've visited for the last few months, I cried. It was different this time though. I cried because it makes my heart happy that you are already finding joy in the memories. She has accomplished one of her last goals.
I'm praying for peace and comfort for all of you.

Wish I could hug you all in person but *~*~*~♥♥♥~Cyber Hugs~♥♥♥~*~*~* will have to do.

True :D

Words on church wall in Upwaltham, England
I will not wish thee riches nor
the glow of greatness, but that
wherever thou go some weary
heart shall gladden at thy smile,
or shadowed life know sunshine for a while.
And so thy path shall be a track of light,
like angels' footsteps passing through the night.
i pray she wakes pain free so you can make another memory

oh what great memories to hold dear to you. easy to be so absorbed in the past year of treatment and especially the past month with the symptoms and pain being at its highest, and as you said, it is just a moment in time... that in time will not be all that it is and you will have the 21 years of memories that will take the place of this past year. It will always be part of the time together but not the only time to remember.
Katie is a fighter and will not let go until she is prepared to go in her own way and she feels that you and the boys are ready.......
I hope that they will be able to reduce the medication enough so that you will be able to spend some time together.........
One thing that really makes me smile is the post about Katie passing the motorcycle exam and then getting her new bike and not long after saying that she felt she might be ready for a bigger more powerful bike .........you could just feel the excitement and pride in the way she posted and how happy she was ........I have thought about that post many times in the past month.......
Kevin, you should be so proud of the man you are and the way you have conducted yourself during the most difficult time in your life. You are an inspiration to so many. Get some rest and thank you for posting ..it is so appreciated.
Blessings to you and the family!

Kevin ... I so understand. We were in this similar place with my MIL in April, 2011. Ages were of course different ... but stages of similarity. It is a blessing to the heart to follow the path to "comfort + possible communication" ... and I have since felt that they do perceive our hourly/daily efforts to reach that special place with and for them. May God's Grace continue to be with each of you ... If we could take away the heartache .. you know that we would. But God has promised that He will not give us more than we can endure. I'm proof of that truth. ;) My prayers are with Kate and all of your family.

Dearest Kevin , Katie and family

Thank you so much for sharing your story with us, and sharing those wonderful photos with all of us. You are such wonderful husband to Katie and a wonderful father to your children. My prayers and thoughts continue to be with you.

In 2007, I lost my dad to cancer, and we kept him at home as you have. As dreadfully exhuasting and heartbreaking this is, I can assure you that the wonderful memories that you have and are continuing to form will stay with you forever. My dad was older - 65 - but I often feel that he is still with us in his way. I pray that you too will be left with beautiful memories and a sense of Katie's presence among you.

with much love

Thank you for keeping us up to date on Katie...I've been praying and asking God for grace and peace for you all and seeing the pictures of Katie smiling amidst it all is a blessing. I am hoping you will be able to accomplish your goal with the pain meds. And I am still praying that if the Lord will, that she be healed completely. I know it would take a miracle, but God is able should he will it.

I just recently heard about Katie through a link on another blogpost. I have been reading through the last year of Katie's posts and have found myself captivated by her observations and explanations of what is happening to her. I am keeping all of you in my thoughts and prayers, and I hope you all will find peace and serenity.

I found Katie's blog through a high school friend. Her posts, pictures and observations have inspired me. Her light still shines. Peace and love to you all.
