Dear friends,

So here is today's story from yesterday that I found so funny and ironic at the same time.  I even have pictures to share with you.

As you know, we have been oohing and aahing over our strawberries that were planted in early spring and in particular have been watching the very first one grow and ripen.  Yesterday morning before swim lessons I quickly ran outside to take a picture of this first berry of ours, as it's been a continual question as to who(s) gets to eat it.

Delectable right?  Let's progress on to evening and Hunter runs outside to take a gander at this berry and he comes tromping back inside and says that there is a bite out of our berry!  So agape and aghast, we ALL rush out the door to look at our poor berry and sure enough there is a bite missing!  We are pointing our fingers at the squirrel population in our neighborhood.

Well, I decide to pull it off anyway and bring it inside and figure if I wash it and cut off the bitten end that we could all still enjoy our first berry, right?

Such a sad ending to our story though.  Kevin yells from the other room, "Don't eat it! We don't know what kind of animal ate it and we don't know what kind of diseases that animal could have had."

First berry not to be enjoyed at all and off to the compost it went!

Until next time.

-Katie

So close, yet so far....it was indeed a beautiful strawberry. Hopefully there will be more soon, enough for you and the mysterious strawberry nibbler.

After all you've been through I think having a little bite out of it would be the least of your problems! I hope you get to enjoy the next one, and many more, too!

Oh, so close to a taste of that juicy berry...hopefully you can all enjoy the next berry! Maybe you could put some wire mesh over the plant/plants to protect it from the critters...lol
I just read your 3 most recent posts (I've haven't had much email time lately). I SO know what you mean about being a pretty or an ugly cry-er. Oh yea, I'm one of the unglies. Ugh.
I think of you so often, and I keep you in my prayers. I hope you're having a good day with the hubby and kiddos today :)
Thanks so much for sharing with us. You are truly a blessing!

Quick tip for gardeners with critters...when you look at your produce and think "that will be just perfect tomorrow!" That's exactly what the critters are thinking too, so pick it now!! If you leave them on the side in the kitchen they will finish ripening :D I'd have eaten it anyway :D XXX

With such a yummy looking strawberry, why did they only take a nibble? Hope your other strawberries ripen quickly and prove delicious.

I can't think of how many quarts of strawberries the kids and I have eaten through...but nothing is as wonderful as one you have grown yourself. Oh the magic! Love to you.

Oh, that IS a sad story. Perhaps you could have each just had a nibble and not eaten down to the part that has a bite out of it. Hopefully you will have more ripen very soon. I will be praying really hard for you tomorrow!

I hope you get to eat some of those berries. That one was so beautiful! Chipmunks take one bite out of each of ours & it irritates me, but we have a whole gardenful, so I can find another. Maybe you need to set the strawberry jar up on a table?

The worst I had was the time I picked up a gorgeous strawberry & saw a huge hole on it. As I tried to decide if I could cut around the hole, the SLUG that ate it came slithering out the hole!! YUCK!

Cute story for your family to cherish always. Once it was cut up soooo tiny, I'd have taken a chance and eaten just one lil piece.

Funny story! For the last couple of years the birds (I assume) have eaten our strawberries. But this year we finally got some to ourselves. I think our whole harvest was about 5 strawberries, and it happened one at a time, but they were the best. Good luck next time!

This looks like a turtle bite to me...they love strawberries..and can stretch that neck quite far..is it within reach of a turtle?

I second the turtle bite. That is what happens in my garden. I have caught them several times. the V shape is kind of the give away. I bet the next one will be just as yummy!

Hugs,
True :D

So sorry you weren't able to enjoy your strawberry. As one who picked strawberries for $$ as a kid I can vouch for eating berries that birds had pecked, slugs had eaten on etc...and I'm still around some 40 years later and still eating strawberries. It's highly unlikely that you'd catch something from an animal eating on your berries.
